19th June: ‘Imja Tsho Action Event 2009’ to be organized

The ‘Imja Tsho Action Event 2009- Beat the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) Action Run and Khumbu Festival’ is scheduled to be organized on June 18, 2009. Organized by Initiatives for Development and Eco Action Support (IDEAS), the event aims to draw national and international attention towards climate change and its effects in the Himalayan areas. The Imja Tsho glacial lake in the Khumbu region has been identified as the most threatening and likely to burst its banks at any time. The Khumbu Festival will be held in Khumjung village on June 19, 2009.

19th June: UPPER MUSTANG- A trek to the forbidden Kingdom of Mustang

This is the perfect time to trek to Upper Mustang, which is located in the extreme fringe of Northern Nepal bordering with Tibet. Mustang is a fantastic geographic region that should be visited at least once in a lifetime. Lo Manthang, the fortified town in Mustang is a spectacular place with uniquely colourful landscapes. The major attraction of this remote district is that it still has a king who is well respected. The region is very much influenced by the culture and tradition of Tibet and prospered during the salt trade between Nepal and Tibet. We visit many of the principal villages and have a day to explore the ancient capital town of Lo Manthang while following the Drovers’ trail through the heart of the Kingdom and crossing passes that are up to 4000 metres.

12th June: SCTA conducts eco-tourism training course

As part of its effort to support eco-tourism in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) conducted a training trip. The training trip was part of its ‘Leave No Trace’ program. This program aims at qualifying national cadres to apply the principles of the program in environmental tours and training trips.

7th June: Nepal sales mission organized in Korea

Nepal Tourism Board organized a Sales Mission in Busan, Korea on June 3, 2009 in a bid to attract more Korean tourists to Nepal. The event was organized in coordination with the Embassy of Nepal in Seoul, one day before the commencement of KOFTA- the largest tourism exhibition in Korea. More than 72 tour operators and 5 travel media from Korea observed the tourism products and attraction of Nepal in a presentation/interaction session which was followed by a business session and commercial networking. Korea is a highly potential market with direct flights from Kathmandu to Seoul.

4th June: Visitor arrivals in May 2009

The number of tourist arrivals, by air only, in May 2009 fell by 5% as compared to May 2008. The figures released by the Immigration Office, Tribhuvan International Airport revealed that the SAARC segment declined by 12.7% including India which fell by 13.6%. Arrivals from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea fell by 4.2%, 17.9%, 2.3%, 11.4% and 23% respectively. However, arrivals from Sri Lanka, China, Thailand and Singapore increased by 19.7%, 36.2%, 87.8% and 65.1% respectively.
The European segment grew by 9.1% including UK and Italy which increased by 11.1% and 24% respectively. Arrivals from France, Germany and Spain declined by 7.2%, 9.4% and 14.7% respectively. Australia, Canada and the USA registered a positive growth of 7.6%, 8.5% and 4.4% respectively.

29th May: International Mount Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) Day being celebrated

The International Mt. Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) Day is being commemorated in Nepal and internationally, to mark the first ascent of Mt. Everest, the world’s highest peak, on May 29, 1953 by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary. The main objective behind the celebration is to pay tribute to the mountaineering heroes for their historic contribution to humanity, and to disseminate the message that Nepal is the hub of mountaineering expeditions and other adventure activities in the world. 27th May: ‘Keep it Real’- Rafting trip organized at Bhote Koshi

Ultimate Descents Nepal, Nepal’s premier rafting company, organized a rafting trip in the upper and lower parts of the Bhote Koshi River for the staffs of US Mission from May 24-25, 2009. There were 21 participants in the two day rafting trip in Nepal’s steepest action packed river. They spent the night at the Borderlands Eco Adventure Resort, which is conveniently located at the highest possible raft launch on the river. 13th May: New Secretary-General elected for UN World Tourism Organization

Dr. Taleb Rifai, a former Jordanian tourism minister, has been elected as the new Secretary-General of the Madrid-based UN World Tourism Organization for a four year term beginning 2010. The 31-member executive council meeting, held from May 7-8, 2009 in the African state of Mali endorsed Dr. Rifai by a majority vote of 20 as against 1 for his closest rival. Dr. Rifai has served as the Director of Jordan’s Economic Mission to Washington DC and later as the Director General of the then newly established Jordanian Investment Promotion Corporation.

7th May: Safi Airways to operate flights to UAE

The inaugural Safi Airways passenger flight will land at Abu Dhabi International Airport on May 14, 2009. This is the capital’s first direct air link with Kabul, Afghanistan. The airlines will operate two flights per week with a fleet of Boeing 737-300s, the fares of which start at US$ 99/ AED 370 for one way. From May 2009, the Safi Airways flights will be available on all Global Distribution Systems making it easier and convenient for passengers to book their flights.

6th May: Thailand Tourism Festival 2009 to be organized

The Thailand Tourism Festival 2009 is considered to be Thailand’s largest travel and tourism showcase that includes a vast range of activities to promote and preserve Thai culture, traditions and the local way of life. Hundreds of professional travel and tourism operators and service providers from Thailand are expected to showcase their products in the festival which is scheduled to take place from June 3-7, 2009. 4th May: April sees an increase in the number of tourist arrivals

Tourist arrivals, by air only, registered a growth by 15.8 % during the month of April 2009 compared to the same period last year. The data compiled by Nepal Tourism Board showed that Indian arrivals increased by 27.3 % and arrivals from all Asian countries posted a positive growth except for Japan. The British and German tourists also increased by 38.9 % and 38.3 % respectively. Similarly, arrivals from the US registered an increase of 5.8 %. However, arrivals from France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria declined during the month. Visitors from China went up by 73 % during April 2009.

30th April: Phase 5 alert declared for Swine-flu outbreak

Government officials of World Health Organization have issued a phase 5 alert regarding the Swine-flu outbreak which is threatening to be a pandemic. Public places including: churches, schools and other organizations in Mexico have been shut down in light of the increasing threat and some of the countries have already issued a travel warning advising its citizens against unnecessary travel to Mexico, where more than 160 people have already succumbed to the deadly outbreak.

26th April: Heathrow Express and GuestLogix Inc. announces agreement

Heathrow Express and GuestLogix Inc., the world’s leading provider of on-board retail solutions to the airline industry, announced an agreement to offer airline passengers the convenience of non-stop train travel to downtown London upon their arrival at the London Heathrow International Airport, the world’s third busiest airport. The Heathrow Express train tickets will be sold soon using the popular GuestLogix Mobile Virtual Store retail platform. The initial rollout will be with a global carrier on all flights originating from New York City.

24th April: Twenty 20 match played on Everest

Team Hillary (named after Edmund Hillary) beat Team Tenzing (named after Tenzing Norgay Sherpa) during a Twenty20 match played at Gorakh Shep, a plateau just 200 meters below the Everest Base camp. The team, comprising of lawyers, bankers and former cops, expected to raise £250,000 for charity. However, the record still needs to be ratified by the Guinness World Records, which currently does not have an entry for highest altitude for a field sport.

22nd April: Nepal Airlines Corporation to re-launch flights to Mumbai

Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), the national flag carrier, is all set to re-launch its operation to Mumbai from May 1, 2009. Operating two flights a week on Mondays and Fridays, the carrier is also offering discounts on its ticket sales.

20th April: ACTE defines opportunities and challenges

The Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE), the first Executive Forum held in Russia, defined opportunities and challenges at an inaugural executive forum in Moscow. Business travel managers from across the country and Europe participated in the landmark event. Seventy- three participants from the largest corporate entities converged to discuss the role of the travel managers, the function of travel management companies and how to advance the industry through partnerships. Some of the most important findings to come out of the Moscow Forum concerned the professional development of travel managers and the travel management companies.

19th April: Task force formed for one-door implementation of TIMS

A six- member task force has been formed to study and suggest measures so as to implement Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) on a one-door basis through Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN). The task force, formed by the Ministry for Tourism and Civil Aviation, has been mandated to recommend measures for one-door implementation of TIMS. The task force comprises of the following members: R B Pakhrin, Jyoti Adhikari, Ishwor Poudel, Dr. Gyanendra Ratna Tuladhar, Ranjan Krishna Aryal and Purushottam Poudel.
